Competent authority
Long-stay (>90 days) requires an MVV (machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf / provisional residence permit, a Type D visa). The application is normally lodged in the Netherlands by the sponsor (employer, recognised educational institution or family member) with the IND under the combined TEV (Entry and Residence) procedure. Once approved, the applicant collects the MVV sticker at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Dublin / VFS Global Dublin.
Application centre
VFS Global (Dublin) handles the MVV collection/biometrics appointment; the TEV/MVV decision is made by the IND in the Netherlands.

Appointment wait
High demand — among the hardest Schengen slots to obtain in Dublin. Official NetherlandsWorldwide warns applicants may not get an appointment right away. Realistically 2-6 weeks, longer in peaks; cancellation slots vanish within seconds.
Application centre
VFS Global Dublin (Cunningham House, 130 Francis Street) — official external service provider; appointment only.
Timeline notes
Clear single channel via VFS Dublin. Netherlands publishes an indicative 15-30 calendar day decision window. Main risk is appointment scarcity, not the decision.

The figures below are the short-stay (Type C) means of subsistence. A long-stay (Type D) visa sets its funds requirement nationally by purpose (study, work, family reunification, income) — check the consulate for the amount that applies to your case.

Notes
EUR 55 per person per day is the basis border-control officials use. Applied flexibly per planned duration, reason for visit and personal circumstances; traveller must also have funds for the return journey (or a guarantor/sponsor).

Consulates apply discretion and may expect a buffer above this figure — treat it as a floor, not a guarantee.

⚠ Special cases & caveats
  • Irish and EU/EEA/Swiss citizensDo not need an MVV or residence permit under free-movement rules; the MVV route is only for third-country nationals resident in Ireland.
  • MVV-exempt nationalities (Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, UK, USA, Vatican City, plus EU/EEA/Switzerland)Do not need an MVV; they may travel to the Netherlands and apply for the residence permit directly with the IND. Third-country nationals residing in Ireland who lack these nationalities do need the MVV.
  • Purpose-specific (work / study / family reunification)See notes; each purpose has its own IND document set and income/qualification thresholds.
